The Pentacam HR

pantacam Dr. McCaa's Clinic at St. Dominic's has the first and, to date, the only Pentacam HR in metro Jackson.

This 3-D corneal scanner precisely measures and analyzes the center of the cornea by reading up to 138,000 elevation points in the cornea’s structure.  Its rotating, 3-D camera overcomes errors that could arise if using older, one-directional scanning instruments.

This state-of-the-art medical technology is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of several eye problems or diseases.  Many types of eye patients may benefit.

Dr. McCaa uses the Pentacam HR for cataract patients who have had refractive surgery in the past, because it accurately calculates what power of intraocular lens they need.

The scanner is used during LASIK laser eye surgery patient’s initial eye examination to ensure they are good candidates for LASIK.  If they are not good candidates (with healthy corneas), LASIK is not performed.

The Pentacam HR identifies corneal alterations caused by trauma, implants or previous refractive treatments.

It also detects whether patients have keratoconus, which is a marked bulging or coning condition, often with thinning of the cornea.  The scanner also is a vital tool for diagnosing patients who have corneal thinning from other causes, who are developing corneal weakening, and those with corneal scarring.
